Hollywood sign has been saved

Hugh Hefner pledges $900,000 to landmark fundraiser Nearly 140 acres behind the iconic Hollywood sign will be saved from development as the result of donations from some of entertainment's largest companies and orgs, along with a final $900,000 from Hugh Hefner that closed the gap in the $12.5 million fundraising effort. Hefner's gift capped a year-long drive by the Trust for Public Land (TPL), which began with $1 million gifts each from The Tiffany & Co. Foundation and Aileen Getty.

Hollywood leaders donated $3.2 million, including major gifts from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, CBS, The Entertainment Industry Foundation, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, the Lucasfilm Foundation, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Steven Spielberg, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and Time Warner Inc., and The Walt Disney Company Foundation. Other Hollywood contributors include Creative Artists Agency, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Norman Lear. "My childhood dreams and fantasies came from the movies, and the images created in Hollywood had a major influence on my life and Playboy," said Playboy founder Hefner. "As I've said before, the Hollywood sign is Hollywood's Eiffel Tower and I am pleased to help preserve such an important cultural landmark." In April, 2009, TPL signed an option to buy the 138 acres behind and to the left of the sign's "H", stretching west to Cahuenga Peak.

The land was bought in 1940 by industrialist Howard Hughes, who intended to build a home for his girlfriend, actress Ginger Rogers. But the relationship ended and after Hughes died, his estate sold the property in 2002 to a group of Chicago investors. They put the property on the market two years ago for $22 million. It was zoned to build four luxury homes.

TCM fest makes Tinseltown feel like small town For four fun days, the TCM Classic Film Festival made Hollywood feel like a small town again.

Film lovers from far-flung points around the world swarmed the four-block area where fest events unspooled, all within walking distance of its hub at the Hollywood Roosevelt. The opening-night bash at Kress on Thursday night set the tone for a long weekend of movie lovers enjoying the company of kindred spirits and an impressive array of talent and creatives responsible for some of filmdom's finest hours.

Among the highlights was Saturday's screening at the Egyptian of Harold Lloyd's 1923 hit "Safety Last" complete with a 12-piece orchestra directed by Robert Israel. Suzanne Lloyd was on hand to introduce the film, noting that it starred both her grandfather and her grandmother, Mildred Davis, who met on a movie set and later married.

Audience included the Nebraska Coast Connection donning Lloyd's famous spectacles. The Hollywoodbased group was on hand to support the legacy of Lloyd, who was born in Nebraska in 1893.

'My World 2.0' fends off mild competition
Teen dream Justin Bieber holds onto the No. 1 slot on the national album chart this week, fending off mild entries from a couple of new rock releases.

Bieber's "My World 2.0" (Island) clings to the apex in its fourth chart week with sales of 92,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending April 18. Collection tracked a 10% loss. Bieber's other top 10 album, his debut "My World," dips two positions to No. 10 with flat sales of 30,000. Only title to muster anything like a challenge this week is MGMT's sophomore release "Congratulations" (Columbia), which opens at No. 2. New York alternative duo, fresh from a high-profile appearance at Coachella last weekend, tracked first-week sales of 66,000. It was tops among five titles from the Sony Music Entertainment family in the top 10 this week.

Lady Antebellum, which picked up five Country Music Awards Sunday, witnessed a 15% boost for their second album "Need You Now" (Capitoal Nashville). Package climbed a notch to No. 3 and shifted 65,000 for the week.

R&B star Usher's "Raymond V. Raymond" (LaFace) falls two rungs to No. 4 in its third chart week. Title moved 64,000, marking a 31% decline.

Week's other top 10 bow is Coheed & Cambria's "Year of the Black Rainbow," in at No. 5. Heavy highconcept New York band logged debut sales of 51,000 units.

EMI-distributed hits disc "Now 33" slides one position to No. 6, reaping sales of 45,000 (off 15%). Lady Gaga's "The Fame" (Interscope) maintains at No. 7, tallying 32,000 units (down 3%) in its 77th chart week. Biggest gainer for the week was Ke$ha's "Animal," which sees a 31% lift and clambers up eight slot to No. 8 behind singer's "Saturday Night Live" appearance. Title moved 31,000. R&B vocalist Monica's "Still Standing" slips three poles to No. 9, moving 30,000 (down 21%). A third collection of music from the Fox TV hit "Glee" should make a dent in next week's chart.
